Module 1 details:
Module 1 introduces the course leader Greg Dryer who emphasises the importance of behaviour management for effective learning. This module covers essential components like equipment, transitions, emotions, safety, and space management. You will be encouraged to reflect on your teaching practices and set personal goals for improvement. Positive reinforcement is highlighted as a key approach, and Greg shares personal experiences with disruptive behaviour, stressing the value of teacher reflection. Additionally, the module addresses various factors contributing to difficulties in PE, such as time constraints and teacher attitudes, providing opportunities for growth and self-improvement.
Module 2 details:
In Module 2, you will learn how to build high expectations and communicate effectively using verbal and nonverbal skills, modelling activities, and reinforcing instructions through body language and routines. This module emphasises consistency and positive reinforcement to boost pupil motivation and participation. Additionally, discover techniques for creating a positive learning environment, handling specific scenarios, and preventing unwanted behaviour through planning and relationship-building. Greg also highlights the impact of engaging and appropriately challenging activities on minimising disruptive behaviour, encouraging a focus on pupil progress rather than competition outcomes.
Module 3 details:
In module 3 you will learn how to use verbal and nonverbal communication skills, model activities for your pupils, and reinforce instructions through body language and routines. Greg emphasises how consistency and catching pupils doing great are techniques to boost motivation and participation. This module also features a discussion on creating a positive learning environment, exploring techniques like using positive language, reinforcing expectations, and being assertive when needed. Greg explains how to handle specific scenarios, such as distributing equipment, stopping the class, and demonstrating activities. He goes on to explain how you can gain valuable insights on using multiple access points for equipment, familiar signals to grab pupils' attention, and giving pupils a purpose for watching demonstrations. An emphasis is also placed on prevention through planning and rebuilding relationships, after addressing unwanted behaviours.
Module 4 details:
In module 4, Greg emphasises the concept of the "just right challenge," setting tasks slightly beyond pupils' current abilities without overwhelming them, and demonstrates how to increase challenges through adjustments to space, time, tasks, equipment, and groups. Greg encourages gradual progression, engaging students with easy activities and gradually introducing changes to challenge them further. Pupil ownership is promoted, allowing them to set their challenges with inspiration from peers. Additionally, the module addresses breaking barriers to sports participation and promoting the benefits of sports for physical and mental well-being, emphasising inclusive and adaptable program offerings. Greg explores traditional and alternative teaching approaches like games-based learning, sport education, and cooperative learning, highlighting how alternatives can improve engagement and behaviour by making learning more relevant and meaningful.
