Course details:
Helen Battelley, an internationally renowned early childhood physical activity, movement play and PE specialist, is a course creator and leader.
In early childhood, children’s learning potential is enhanced by movement, and consolidating movement and learning as a methodology will enhance engagement and learning potential.
Aimed specifically at classroom teachers, this course looks at blending both academia and movement to create a kinaesthetic classroom. The focus is around developmentally appropriate provision and applying a child-centred approach to learning to deliver the early learning goals and support continuous provision into KS1.
Through both practical and theoretical content, you will gain the skills, knowledge and confidence to create an inspiring physical environment to engage children aged 3 – 7 years in all subject areas and support holistic development.
Module 1 details:
In Module 1, you’ll meet course leader Helen Battelley who will take you through the course outcomes.
You’ll look at why the Early Years is so important and why a moving child is a learning child.

In Module 2, you’ll start by exploring the difference between physical activity, physical literacy, physical development and physical education, and understand the importance of physical play. You’ll learn how best to support inclusive practice in Early Years physical activity.
You’ll then move on to exploring developmentally appropriate practice and look at teaching strategies to improve engagement.
You’ll explore midline development and retained reflexes, and finish the module by thinking about hand dominance, laterality and writing implications.
