The Introduction to Outdoor Adventurous Activities course is led by Michael Chamberlain, an experienced educator specializing in Physical Education (PE) and Outdoor Education. Emphasising teamwork and problem-solving, he founded Open Minds to provide quality Outdoor Adventure Activities (OAA) teaching.
OAA is introduced as a vital part of the PE National Curriculum, promoting fundamental skills across Key Stages and aligning with curriculum aims for physical development and social skills. The course stresses the importance of OAA in emotional and social development, encouraging teachers to approach it with enthusiasm.
Preparation for OAA, including resource requirements and lesson planning, is covered extensively. Unique resources like drainpipes and noodles are highlighted, along with the need for pre-lesson readiness to ensure smooth execution and student collaboration.
The developmental journey of incorporating OAA into Key Stage 2 is explored, emphasising foundational concepts from Key Stage 1 and direct teaching in Key Stage 2. The course also covers lesson structure, introducing essential terminology and practical activities like search orienteering using playing cards. .
