Course details:
This comprehensive course, led by experienced PE and dance educator Fiona Ellis, is designed to empower teachers to introduce dance in primary education as a tool for creative expression, physical activity, and overall child development.
Aligned with the National Curriculum, the course will help build confidence in delivering engaging dance lessons that foster creativity, social skills, and physical abilities in children. Fiona’s approach emphasises inclusivity and enjoyment, demonstrating that effective dance instruction relies on enthusiasm and creativity rather than dance proficiency.
The course begins by covering the fundamentals of teaching dance, including the use of theme-based lessons, child-led creativity, and diverse stimuli such as images and videos to inspire children’s choreography. By exploring core dance elements, actions, space, dynamics, relationships, and timing, teachers can create lessons that encourage children to express themselves confidently through movement, with space for exploration and learning from mistakes.
Progression in dance education across Key Stages 1 and 2 is also covered, detailing how children can be guided from basic movements in Key Stage 1 to more advanced skills, choreography, and performance abilities in Key Stage 2. Lessons are structured around a theme or stimulus, progressively building towards a final performance while fostering creativity. To ensure continuous improvement, the course includes guidance on formative and summative assessment techniques, including practical checklists, to evaluate skills and encourage growth through performance and feedback.
A holistic approach to dance instruction runs throughout, focusing on children’s physical, social, cognitive, and emotional development. The STEP framework (Space, Task, Equipment, People) is introduced to help adapt lessons for varying abilities, ensuring inclusivity and an appropriate level of challenge.
Strategies for behaviour management, such as positive reinforcement and specific praise, are provided to create a supportive learning environment that minimises disruptions and encourages active participation.
Guidance is also included on selecting suitable music, involving pupils in music choices to further enhance creativity and engagement.
This course equips teachers with the tools, frameworks, and strategies needed to deliver impactful dance lessons that promote self-expression, skill development, and a lasting appreciation for movement.

Module 1 details:
Module 1 introduces course leader Fiona Ellis, who shares her experience in PE and dance education. It highlights the role of dance in the National Curriculum as both creative expression and physical activity, addressing common challenges such as vague guidance and lack of teacher confidence. The module demonstrates that effective teaching does not require dance expertise but benefits from enthusiasm, creativity, and engaging themes.
Theme-based lessons, child-led creativity, and stimuli (e.g., images and videos) are encouraged to inspire choreography. Dance is presented as an inclusive tool to foster creativity, social skills, and physical development, enabling pupils to explore and learn from their mistakes. The module also covers fundamental dance elements, actions, space, dynamics, relationships, and timing, providing strategies to help children express themselves through movement.
Module 2 details:
Module 2 focuses on dance progression across Key Stages 1 and 2, outlining National Curriculum expectations and explaining how children move from basic movements in Key Stage 1 to more complex patterns, control, and performance in Key Stage 2. It sets out progression points for each year, covering skill development, choreography, performance, and evaluation.
Lesson planning begins with a theme or stimulus, such as Bollywood or poetry, and builds towards a final performance. Children are encouraged to engage creatively through structured phases and enthusiastic delivery, reinforcing a positive learning environment. The module also includes formative and summative assessment guidance, with practical checklists to ensure effective evaluation and continuous improvement.
Module 3 details:
Module 3 promotes a holistic approach to PE through dance, addressing the physical, social, cognitive, and emotional development of children. It introduces the STEP framework (Space, Task, Equipment, People) to adapt lessons for different abilities, ensuring inclusivity and challenge. Behaviour management strategies, such as positive reinforcement and specific praise, are also included to foster engagement and minimise disruptions.
In addition, this module provides advice on selecting appropriate music to match lesson themes and encourages involving pupils in music choices, further strengthening creativity and connection to dance activities.
